Have a Faithful Climate Conversation this year
“The most important thing you can do to fight climate change is to talk about it.” ~ Dr. Katharine Hayhoe
No matter who we are and where we live, climate change is affecting each of us right now. Whether we are concerned about the world our children and grandchildren will inherit, the people across the world who are losing their island states, or the neighbour whose roof collapsed in the latest extreme weather event, many of us are very concerned and just don’t know where to start.
Renowned climate scientist and author, Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, gives us a very simple answer, start by talking about it, from your heart, not from facts and figures. If that is not quite enough to go on, For the Love of Creation has you covered. Check out one of the original three Faithful Climate Conversations. These simple guides will help you and a friend lead a group conversation with church members, neighbours or friends. The three different guides are designed for three different entry points, depending on how familiar your group is with the topic. Conversations are designed for two hours; we encourage you to tailor each one to your own needs. These blogs share the experiences and outcomes of six different facilitators or hosts, each in a unique situation.
Help us reach 100 conversations this year!
For the Love of Creation is a faith-based initiative that Mennonite Church Canada endorses. We invite you to make use of the For the Love of Creation resources during this Season of Creation and all year long. The theme chosen by the international Season of Creation committee is “To hope and act with Creation.” Check out these Mennonite Church Worship Outlines linking us to the global church in the Season of Creation. Talking about it is the first step. Begin a Faithful Climate Conversation today!
For more inspiration, see where Faithful Climate Conversations took a small group in Brandon, Manitoba in this 3-minute video: Sustainable Brandon - a wonderful example of what can come out of a faithful climate conversation. Perhaps you would want to show it to your congregation or a leadership group.
The conversation guides are very self-explanatory and flexible. Questions can be directed to Sandy Plett at splett@mennonitechurch.ca. If you’d be interested in training or conversation on how to lead a climate conversation, please email Sandy today!
