Historical note

The Coaldale Mennonite Church was founded in 1928 in Coaldale, Alberta. Eleven families were charter members. They used rented facilities for worship. In 1931 they began to build their own meeting house but only completed the basement. The membership was 49 in 1931. The rest of the building was completed in the winter of 1936-1937. In 1948 the membership was 136. In 1949 this meeting house was enlarged. In 1954 the membership was 288. In 1958 a new larger meeting house was built. In 1960 the membership was 311. Later an education wing was added. The membership remained at just over 300 until 2000 when it was 324, the year the congregation withdrew from the Conference of Mennonites in Canada. The leaders of the congregation were: P. P. Dyck (1928-1929), Jacob Gerbrandt (1930-1932), Peter Schellenberg (1932-1981), Wilhelm Martens (1934-1945), F. W. Dyck (1931-1979), Johan Görtz (1931-1935), Johann Vogt (1931-1946), Abram Enns (1936-1977), Peter Friesen (1936-1946), Peter Goossen (1941-1943), Klaas Janzen (1943-1948), Heinrich Lepp (1948-1953), Jacob Siemens (1949-1965), Peter Unger (1949-1955), Otto Bartel (1954-1955), Johannes Dyck (1954-1961), Peter Retzlaff (1967-1975), Norman Bergen (1976-1986), F. David Dyck (1987-1989), Peter Funk (1990-1997), Ed Balzer (1998-2000+).

Scope and content note

This fonds contains bulletins (1968-1996), annual reports (1962-2000), Conference of Mennonites of Alberta newsletters (1987), congregatgional newsletter (1989-1993), constitutions (1968-1993), congregational meeting minutes (1971-1978), directories (1975-1994), and congregational histories (1953-1978). The records pertain to the founding and development of the Mennonite congregation in Coaldale, Alberta. They document some of the leaders and participants in the congregation.
