Historical note

Charleswood Mennonite Church in Winnipeg had its beginning in May 1963 under the sponsorship of The Bethel Mennonite congregation.The 31 charter members consisted on 18 transfers from Bethel Mennonite Church and 13 transfers from other Mennonite congregations. The organization began on September 15, 1963.  The congregation was involved in sponsoring Crossroads, an inner-city project, Sargent MCC thrift shop, and Bethel Place.  In November 1965 the membership was 51. In 1973 the membership was 161. In 2000 the membership stood at 228. The leaders of the congregation were: Cornie Rempel (1963-1969, 1975), Ron Hunsicker (1970-1975), Larry Kehler (1976-1979), Esther and Dan Epp-Tiessen (1980-1981), Jessie Kehler (1981-1982), Elsa Barg (1982-1983), Helen and Henry Dueck (1983-1984), Fred Unruh (1985-1992), Lisa Carr Pries (1993-1996), Carolyne Epp-Fransen (1993-1994), John Braun (1994- ).

Scope and content note

This fonds consists of registers, directories, bulletins, annual reports, news clippings, congregational programmes, correspondence, minutes, newsletters, constitutions, position papers, and litanies which pertain to the founding and development of the Mennonite congregation in Charleswood. It documents the leaders and participants in the congregation. This fonds consists of registers (1963-1979), directories (1969-1995, 2000-2017), annual reports (1963-1993, 1997, 2003-2017), news clippings (1963), congregational programmes for various events (1965-1992), correspondence (1970-1976), congregational meeting minutes (1963-1989), church council meeting minutes (1962-1989), newsletters (1973-1994), The Grapevine newsletter (2006-2017), constitutions ([196-?]-1978), position papers ([197-?]-1988), and litanies ([197-]). The records pertain to the founding and development of the congregation in Charleswood and they documents the leaders and participants in the congregation.
