Historical note

The Carrot River area of Saskatchewan was settled by Russian Mennonite immigrants in the 1920s. They formed a congregation there and joined the Conference of Mennonites in Canada in 1929. The following year they joined the Hoffnungsfelder Gemeinde. In 1931 there were 52 members in this congregation which was a part of the multi-congregation Gemeinde. The congregation grew steadily until 1959 when the membership reached 107. In 1960 they decided to leave the Hoffnungsfelder Gemeinde and become an independent congregation, named Grace Mennonite Church. Then in 1962 they changed their name again to Carrot River Mennonite Church. By 1965 the membership stood at 132. It remained fairly steady around that number until the 1990s. In 2000 the membership was 160. The leaders of the congregation were: Cornelius Boschmann (1931-1933, [ He then was in the Hoffnungsfelder congregation at Petaigan until 1959], 1960-1969), Richard Friesen (1934-1946), David Dyck (1934-1942), Peter Epp (1944-1968), John Zacharias (1950-1968), John H. Wiebe summer of (1961), then again (1962-1965).  John F. Wiebe, (1966-1968), Wally Zacharias (1965, 1976), Peter Peters (1969-1975), Irvin Schmidt (1977-1982), Abe Buhler (1983-1989), Frank Enns (1990-1991), Philip Gunther (1992-1999), Craig Hollands (2000- ).

Scope and content note

The fonds contains bulletins (1963-1997, 1999-2002), a membership list (1976), annual reports (1974-1992, 2002), and congregational meeting minutes (1974-1992). The records pertain to the development of the Mennonite congregation in Carrot River, Saskatchewan and they document the some of the leaders and participants in the congregation.
