The Membership Committee was appointed by the Joint General Board Executive Committee in 1998 to set out principles of accountability and authority between and among congregations, area conferences and country bodies of the integrated Mennonite Church (MC-GC). It met for the first time in late August 1998. James Waltner was chair of the committee and the other members were: John Esau, Leslie Francisco, Mariam Martin, Laban Peachey, Clare Anne Ruth-Heffelbower, David Schroeder and Helmut Harder (staff member). In addition to several meetings and correspondence by e-mail, the committee work was aided by a consultation on membership held in Kansas City in 11-14 March 1999. Their final report and recommendations were presented to a delegate assembly of the three bodies – General Conference Mennonite Church, Mennonite Church and Conference of Mennonites in Canada – in St. Louis in July 1999.
This sub-series contains the files of David Schroeder, long time Bible teacher and church leader of the Conference of Mennonites in Canada and the General Conference Mennonite Church, who was a member of the Integration Membership Committee. The records includes correspondence, submissions, reports and minutes of the activities of this committee from the time that it was appointed in mid-1998 up until it presented it report and recommendations at the St. Louis Assembly in July 1999. There are a few items of correspondence to the committee reflecting on the St. Louis ’99 process, as well as one letter of thanks to the committee members from chairman James Waltner dated July 2001.
