See background on Iraq Sanctions.June 2, 2000
The Honourable Lloyd Axworthy Dear Mr. Axworthy; I am writing with regard to Iraq. I want to urge you to implement the recommendations that the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs made last April. That Committee called for: lifting the economic sanctions, seeking regional disarmament, and establishing a diplomatic presence in Iraq. I would also urge you to protest the ongoing bombing by Britain and the United States. I appreciate the positive steps that you have taken, particularly your efforts to improve the terms of the Oil-for-Food program. This has allowed more essentials into the country. However the suffering of the people continues on an enormous scale. This may not be entirely the fault of western countries but we must do everything we can to alleviate it. I wish you God's guidance as you seek to respond constructively to various international tragedies on behalf of the people of Canada.
Sincerely,
|
